My Noisy Neighbors

They are always looking gorgeous but wow! are they noisy. They start screeching at sunrise and continue throughout the day. The males fan their incredible tails that shimmer in the sun...the females look somewhat bored. Occasionally, white peacocks on the run from the ashram make an appearance and add their exotic aura. The chattering monkeys, cawing crows, and chirping squirrels add to the din and complete the scene from my windows.

No, I have not lost my mind and decided to post pictures of me in the Bathtub here. Just wanted to share a few views of Bath, England where I was privileged to be invited down for a weekend. Kevin and Lynne Copp, a couple that are providers of Work-Life Balance Training to DoubleClick, invited me for a weekend in the British countryside.

I took a quick train down from London and Kevin picked me up at the station. We had a few good meals with wine and good conversation with the family in their open air atrium that faces the garden.

We toured Bath Abbey and the Roman Baths taking in thousands of years of history and some good shopping. ;)

A sunny afternoon in Marlborough, Wiltshire

I also toured the town of Marlborough with the Copps. Marlborough has been an important market town for over 800 years since King John granted its first charter in 1204. Marlborough was a center for much local trade and an important staging-post for those travelling between London and Bath or Bristol.

Marlborough is known for having the widest High Street in all of the UK.

Old St. Peter's Church sits at one end of the high street and just beyond it, in the grounds of Marlborough College, was the site of Marlborough Castle, centered on a huge Neolithic mound in which (local legend has it) Merlin was buried.

The college complete with Merlin's Mound has a very Harry Potter feel to it. Overall I had a fascinating first foray into England outside of London.

Dad and I had a great day at the races.

Ascot is the biggest track we have every been too but what really impressed us was the spirit of the English people.

We saw quite a fashion show of British beauties in every type hat ever designed. Oh yes and there were horses, too. The races were longer than the US and some were stampedes of up to 30 horses. They race on grass and one race was over 2 miles long.

We had a good time after the races as it took us two hours to get to the train as we stopped for champagne and singing and talking with the crowd. At the end of the day no one was in a hurry to leave. They stay and sing along to British songs and wave flags regardless of the days wins or losses. Despite popular conceptions, they love their Queen.

We head out to Ascot again tomorrow. This time we will be better able to focus on the races. :)

Dad's Adventures in London

Dad arrived in London on Friday the 13th. He made it on the red eye and I picked him up at Heathrow without incident. Friday night we had a light dinner and rested up.

Saturday was the celebration of the Queen's 82nd birthday. There was a 205 member band and hours of ceremonial presenting of colors and review of the troops. She had an excellent sunny day for the celebration. After watching this, we set out on the tube to Westminster and stopped there to look around at the Thames and the many many tourists who had the same idea.

We got back on the train to London Bridge and Borough Market. Dad thought it was by far the most lavish Farmer's Market he had ever seen. We spent time tasting the great cheeses and samples and checking out the beautiful produce and fresh seafood, meat and flowers. Dad, being a super critic, could find nothing that needed to be improved. His only comment was that it was very crowded, I told him the Susan Herbert method of beating the crowds was to be there before the farmers.

We went to the Wine Wharf for lunch and had a unique dish of six different dips and pita bread and some wine and recharged our batteries for the journey home. We bought more Monmouth coffee, now a staple of Kate's apartment and jumped on the train home. We had a nice dinner at home and Dad did the dishes, not being treated as company the second night per Herbert rules whoever cooks does not have to do the dishes.

This morning we went to the local mall and got Dad measured for a suit. In true Herbert fashion, mom would be proud, we were there an hour before the stores opened. We could browse for the 1st half an hour but not purchase anything until noon. We rented Dad the full Ascot package including a top hat and bought a race day hat complete with feathers for Kate.

We then made a quick pit stop at home and continued on to find Churchill's Wartime Underground Chambers for directing WW2 operations. We toured the bunker type underground construction and imagined what it must have been like there in the early 1940s during the bombing of London. We listened to some of the conversations between Churchill and Roosevelt on our audio tour. We emerged from our tour exhausted.

We walked to the nearest pub on Whitehall Street. In front of Parliament, many protesters were awaiting the arrival of George W Bush to greet him with anti war banners in hand. We had fish and chips and a beer overlooking the demonstrators and many police. We were right in the action as we walked to the Westminster station to get back on our train home.

There has been plenty of activity in the backyard of Kate's flat as well. From picnics to ballgames there is always something to watch. However, no fox sighting yet for Dad.

That is it so far, a memorable Father's Day and the best London weather any of my visitors have had.

I've just finished my second glass painting. It's baby Krishna getting into the butter. You can recognize traditional Tanjore paintings because they are always embellished with gems or at least glitter and gold. I only wish I had taken this up when I first arrived in Chennai.

My holiday in London is fast coming to an end. I leave tomorrow for Chennai and I am taking many great memories with me. Besides all the fun things we did together, I also toured London on my own. I became familiar with the Underground and took it to revisit Borough Market one day. (Kate and I had spent time there earlier in my visit and I really enjoyed the colorful displays of food, the milling crowds, the invitingly warm restaurants.)

Yesterday, I left with Kate in the morning. She went to work and I went to see the Tower of London. One of the Yeomen, or Beefeaters, led a tour of the site, pointing out all the grisly beheadings that had taken place there. Of course, I marveled at the Crown Jewels with their enormous diamonds and other precious gems.

From there I walked across Tower Bridge, past glass sphere that is City Hall, and back to Borough Market for one last go-round and a chance to buy some real coffee and a goodie.
Then back to Kate's on the Underground. It was a cold, windy day and I was happy to sit by the fire.

Mom comes to London

Embankment, stopped at little cafes,

had teas, sandwiches and walked

The London Marathon during a cold, rainy

spell. We think we walked 26 miles at least.

Saw a variety of racers including a dog, a

superhero, a Santa Claus and a naked man.

Also saw Buckingham Palace, Covent Gardens,

Fortnum and Mason and more..

Kate's cozy flat, complete with a fox that

visits the garden every morning.

We walked Portobello Road as part of our

Saturday tour on foot. Also saw Kensington

Palace, ate at Diana's favorite cafe, got caught

in the rain, shopped on Kilburn High Road,

went to the movies and saw "27 Dresses."

Today was my first day in the office. It is a bright open layout and I share the an office with my colleague and friend Stephen White.

Just getting started here. Feels good to finally be here after so much planning and transitioning.

Ahh! Homemade Chocolate Fudge

Saturday morning Namy and Jack made a panful of fudge. Namy found a recipe online and copied it. She and Jack measured ingredients, stirred everything together, and watched it cook. The best part was licking the spoons and cleaning the pan.

An Amazing Birthday!

After I recovered from my flu bout, we celebrated my birthday on Sunday. Went out for a delicious brunch at the Park Sheraton Hotel. Then later in the afternoon we continued the celebration with a chocolate cake. The cake was topped by something that looked like a big pink plastic flower...but when it was lit, the petals magically opened and revealed an array of flaming birthday candles. I have never seen anything like it.

My moving sale went well. Craigslist is a powerful thing. We had lots of foot traffic from people in the building as well.

I feel like all those years working sample sales with Dad taught me the subtle art of pricing things to sell and marketing all a products features.

My friend Emily was a great help.

Now I mainly just have clothes and books to take to London. And a few family heirlooms I would not part with.

We left Palm Desert early Saturday and breezed along over the Grapevine. Thank heavens Bill was ready to get out and stretch and insisted we make a coffee stop. That's where we discovered the flat tire. No problem. With the handy dandy Highlander manual for directions, in no time, the Bills had the tire replaced with a spare. The rest of the drive was blessed with little traffic and we were in San Francisco shortly after 5 p.m.

Christmas Day began with breakfast at the hotel and hurrying back for a heartfelt visit by phone with Chennai. We loved hearing all about Santa's very early morning visit! The we went to church (our third Mass in as many days) and heard a stirring homily by one of the best pastors ever. He spoke of darkness, fears, and the light of the world.

Back at the hotel we opened our gifts amidst a lot of ohhhing and ahhhing. Thanks to a friend, we got a good tip on the best French restaurant in Palm Desert...and we were there for dinner. Tres magnifique!! A wonderful menu, great wine, incredible desserts. All in all it was a beautiful celebration.

This is the house that Jack built. It's a bright red house with a door and windows -- plus a roof for animals. It is just one of his many art projects Jack has been doing at school and bringing home. Last week it was an elephant, a horse and cart, and a bear mask with moving eyes. (His mom says she will hold an art exhibit of his works soon.) Not only is he having fun with art, he is also learning to write his numbers and letters.

Mr. Lucky has a new home and he is very happy. He has adopted a British family with two children and he has fish and chips at least once a week. The family lives at the Atrium and the kids have had their eyes on the frisky little kitten since they first saw him. Mum said yes, but father said no...until a weak moment. That was all it took. Mr. Lucky packed up his teddy bear, his litter box and was gone. (Jack and Namy have visiting rights, of course.)

We just got a puppy. We named her Lucy. She's a pug and about two months old. This is us on our way home after buying her. She has big black eyes and is so playful and cute. We had been looking online and in Chennai for a puppy for weeks. And then we got her on Mama's birthday!

Rainy Fireworks in New York CIty

I was able to get a great view of the Macy's Fireworks along the East River from Doug and Michelle's balcony. The Macy's barge pulled up at the end of their street and gave us a great show despite the rainy weather. Here is my favorite smiley face firework and a picture of me in red white and blue after getting soaked inthe rain.

I went with a really fun group to go see Andy Senor Jr. a friend of mine play Angel in RENT. He is the one in the hat standing next to me. :)

It was fun to see the show again knowing someone on stage and we got to go out with the cast afterwards.

Jack and Namy have made two new friends. Ellen and her brother Jack and her mom and dad just moved into the Atrium from England a few days ago. It didn't take long for the Jacks to become buddies... and for Namy and Ellen to find that they are both great swimmers. This photo was taken just after Namy and Ellen accidentally slipped into the swimming pool in their play clothes. Nana didn't think it was an accident...

Boston and NYC

The Hoenscheid's came to New York for a great visit to see Legally Blonde. We had a wonderful pre theater dinner Friday night at db Bistro Moderne.

Anne, Jordan and Lisa saw a lot of New York via the Hop On Hop Off Bus.

We had drinks and took in the view atop the Hotel Gansevoort.

Saturday morning we flew to Boston to celebrate John's Baptism.

What a slice of heaven! I spent three weeks at the Bodhi Zendo near Kodaikanal, just about eight hours away from Chennai and at least 50 degrees farenheit. The center, which is in the Japanese zen tradition, is surrounded by mountains velveted with forests, banana groves, and coffee fields. Mists blanketed the hills in the early mornings, and thunderstorms blew in over the mountains almost every afternoon. Cool, sweater weather. The organic salads alone were worth the train and taxi rides. Meditation hours, the silences, the talks by the zen master (a Jesuit) were nourishing for the heart and soul. All in all, wonderful weeks away.

a fantastic visit

well, dad and I had such a good time with choo, namy, and jack. we even watched the kids for few days while choo was away on a business trip. namy and jack are such sweethearts. while there energy level is hard to match, dad and i really loved the time taking care of the kids. when choo got back we were all happy to see her and spent the rest of the visit enjoying the sites both in and around the city. we really look forward to their next visit.... just hopefully next time bob will be there too.

the spa

Petra, my roommate from college and I are staying and spa'ing at the Camelback Inn in Scottsdale this weekend. These are the fireside chaises we passed out on before and after getting our massages. It is great catching up and we are enjoying the 102 degree weather by remaining poolside. A welcome break from NYC.

Dad and Kate had a great time in Lexington with the Hoenscheids. Although we did not win the big money a good time was had by all. Jim and Elizabeth brought their new baby, John Anthony. Kate brought her friend Jenifer who in turn brought plenty of big hats!

Montessori Graduation!

There she was in a gorgeous emerald green silk sari! After nine months of working into the nights on homework, driving across the city and back to class everday, practice teaching, and compiling huge, weighty notebooks on Montessori methods, Chooch received her cerificate last night. She and her classmates and their family and friends celebrated with a reception here at the Atrium in the Pavilion. There were about 100 people, lots of Indian-style snacks, soft drinks and juices. We had fun meeting everyone who, like Chooch, had completed the challenging course and were ready to enjoy a party without a single worry about homework. --- Mom

Namy was caught by the family paparazzi in a toy store after her performance in Billabong's annual stage production. Namy danced with her first grade class in a dreamy number that the audience loved. Afterwards, we all went out to dinner and, not surprisingly, the star was fast asleep before she reached home. --- Mom

Dad's Big 8-5! (Shhhhh!)

For Dad's Birthday we had a few great dinners. The First one was in neighborhood at Westlake Joe's where the Italian Waiters sang a great rendidtion of Happy Birthday and we all enjoyed good grilled fish and Ceasar salads.

Later in the week we went to another favorite, the Spinnaker in Sausalito where we had a great window seat and view back of the San Francisco skyline on a clear and starry night. Gina joined us for dinner number 2. It is always good to stretch a birthday out to as many celebrations as possible. Especially, number 85.

Holey Moley! It's Holi in Chennai

Only in India! Take a look at Holi, a beautiful, if somewhat bizarre, holiday in India when children and adults toss brightly colored powders and colored water all over each other. Namy and I were invited to play with some of my neighbors. (Jack appeared a little later.) I only went to take photos for the blog but I was waylaid by buckets of water. After some serious scrubbing, we lost our rainbow hues but our clothes will never be the same. I only wish I could have recorded the shrieks and laughter. --- Mom
